To Prime, Or Not To Prime, That Is The Question? Pt. 1

If you haven't already noticed, I am a big big big fan of eye primers, and primers in general. I always feel like its worth it to spend money on decent primers to make sure your makeup stays and looks good, because if you don't you're probably wasting your money on things like eyeshadow and foundation. Now I know what you're thinking, I don't use a primer and my makeup looks faboosh! Ok, congrats on probably having amazing skin and perfect levels of oil and moisture. But if you're anything like me then you can probably benefit from primer in many different ways. So I've decided to do a two part series on primers. Today's bit is going to be focused on eye primer, and tomorrow's will focus on face primer.

Hello. My name is Alex and I have oily eyelids. Yes, the secret is out. If I don't wear eye primer my eyeshadow and/ or eyeliner will either be completely smudged off, or smeared everywhere in about an hour. When I first came across NARS' Pro-Prime I thought that it was too good to be true. I could finally wear eyeshadow and have it last all day without any clumping or smearing. But it was more than that, I noticed a difference in the vibrancy of my eye makeup. Colours were brighter and layered much better.

So I decided to put on my scientist pants and do a little scientifically research. I took one of my brightest eye shadows and swatched it on my cousin's arm. Once with NARS' primer, once with Urban Decay's Primer Potion, and once with nothing. I then took some pictures.

NARS Pro- Prime Urban Decay Primer Potion
From Left to Right: Urban Decay's Primer, NARS' Primer, and no primer.

Unfortunately, the on camera difference is minimal. You can tell there is much more pigment in both the swatches with primer, but between them there is a very minimal difference. I can tell you that NARS' primer is white and spreads completely translucent. Whereas all of the Urban Decay primers (I had samples of all different versions) were coloured. This is fine if you're skin colour completely matches, but if you're like me and have super pale skin, or more darker skin this may prove an issue.

As for staying power, both primers will last you all day. With zero creasing. And I've tested both primers with powder and liquid/ mousse eyeshadow. The thing that I love most about eye primer's is that I believe they can allow you to to spend less on shadows. How you may ask? Well cheaper drugstore shadows may not offer strong pigmentation or staying power. But with one good primer, you can transform those cheap shadows into amazingly beautiful works of art.

As a bit of a side note I would like to add that you may have to spend a bit more to get a good eye primer. I tried the NYX eye primer in pearl and it was terrible. It just creased and clumped the second I moved my eyelid. I know $20-30 may be a bit steep for a primer, but I promise you they last a really long time as you never need a lot (unless you have like giant size eyelids) and it is so very worth it.

What do you think? Are you pro or anti eye primer? Which product do you use?

PS- I apologize for the lack of photos but I am currently away from home and do not have my camera or products to take more pictures for you :(

Pamper Night / Face Mask!

KIT Peel Off Face Mask

I have a pretty busy weekend ahead of me so I thought I should take tonight to relax and have some time to myself. My lovely fellow blogger Ellie Ferrer told me that Rexall / Pharmaplus (sorry non-Canadian readers) sold The Balm products so I thought I would venture over and see for myself. Plus who can pass up a drugstore visit?? I only purchased a few things, and this was one of them. The KIT (which is Rexall's own brand I believe???) Peel Off Mask in Pomegranate. This one is designed to target blemishes as pomegranate works as a natural astringent, and I have a few little buggers on chin (such a random place!). You simply wash your face, apply the mask (this one comes with a ton of product so you can have a really thick layer), let it dry for 20-25 minutes, and obviously the best part, peel it off. As I said I purchased this at my local Rexall for $1.99 and at the very least it made my skin super smooth. I will post a follow up tweet if it helps to rid my face of the blemishes.

I also bought the new Cosmo, some reduced Cadbury Creme Eggs (yumm!) and a blue mascara that I'm really excited to try out! Tomorrow I'm off to Toronto for some good old fashion WWE! What are your plans for the weekend? How do you "pamper" yourself?

The Balm's Nude' Tude Palette Review / Swatch

The Balm Nude Tude

A few months ago I purchased The Balm's Nude' Tude palette from HauteLook. I had my eye on it for a few months but couldn't find it at a reasonable price anywhere in Canada. When I got the email the night before, I set my alarm for 8am to make sure that dang thing did not sell out before I could get my hands on it. The Balm's website lists the palette as $36, but I think I paid $18 for it (honestly I lost the receipt and email leaving me to do my credit card math manually) which is a complete steal.

The Balm Nude Tude

I had first heard EssieButton rave about it in one of her old videos. If I'm being 100% honest with you, I'd want to buy anything that girl talks about. But this time I am glad that I am so easily influenced because this palette is a staple in my make-up collection. The colour range is great, we have matte neutrals (sassy, snobby, and stubborn), some more stand out matte neutrals (sultry--which is darker in person, & sexy-- which is an amazing auburn colour), and of course my favourites of any palettes, the glitters (stand-offish, selfish, sophisticated, seductive, silly, serious & sleek).

The Balm Nude Tude
Top (Left to Right): Sassy, Snobby, Stubborn, Stand-offish, Selfish, Sultry.
Bottom (Left to Right): (a bit of Stubborn), Stand-offish, Selfish, Sultry, Sophisticated, Seductive, Sexy, Silly, Serious, Sleek.

These shadows are super pigmented, and creamy (in a powder formula obviously). They glide on your eyelid like an elegant ballerina. The colours pretty much all go together and you can completely change up which ones you use. Unlike the Naked 3 palette which I find there are a pretty set amount of variations that you can do or else it looks like a hot mess. That's why I think if you're going to spend the money on a palette, let alone a neutral one, this is the way to go. I've been testing these shadows out everyday this week and there really is no way to screw this up.

The Balm Nude Tude
Stand-offish

I thought since I've been testing these beautiful babies out I would include my favourites so far. I knew the second I swatched it Stand-offish would be my #1 favourite. You can use it as a highlight under the brow, middle of the eyelid, and corner of the eye. As well as just as a general all over the lid shadow. Today I wore this with a bit of Selfish & Sultry in the crease and it made an amazing day appropriate smokey eye.

The Balm Nude Tude
Seductive

The perfect sparkly gold. Forget a gold medal, give me this. I love that this colour could work so well with all eye colours. I have blue eyes and I found that it really made them pop. But I can tell that it would really standout on a brown or any other colour eye. You can totally play up this colour at night, or wear it as a light crease / outer V colour.

The Balm Nude Tude
Selfish

Last, but oh, certainly not least we have selfish. Which pretty much describes how I feel about this entire palette. I don't want to share it with any of my friends. The camera does not do this colour justice. It is more of a taupe with some golden hues. If you're a fan of MAC's Satin Taupe, or have been looking for a colour like that, they are pretty much the exact same. Which is great because I've been lusting after Satin Taupe for a while, and now I have the best of both worlds!

The only negative thing I have to say about this palette is that I wish it was in my hands sooner. And if you notice in the swatches, some of the darker matte colours were a tidbit chalky and did not blend as well as the other colours. But they are still great colours and are definitely workable with a good brush (which is not the one that comes with this palette). I just threw out the brush because I knew I'd never use it anyways. I also would like to add that I did use Urban Decay's Primer Potion under all of the swatches in order to assure proper pigmentation. Now, I always use eye primer but if you do not then the lighter colours may not be very pigmented, but the darker colours shouldn't be any different. The Nude' Tude definitely packs a punch (hahaha that's kinda punny), and if you have the chance please accept this into your home and love her as your own.

My Lip Care Routine!

So, before you continue to read this post I have a few preliminary notes to go over. First and foremost, these pictures are horrid. I struggled even putting them up. They are such good quality that they are bad. The camera picked up the teeny tiny facial hairs and made it look I have a moustache. Also, it looks like I chew on my lips so bad that they are bloody. BUT I do not. All that aside, I really wanted to get this post up for you guys, regardless of the pictures. What's a few facial hairs amongst friends right? I swear if this was a serious problem I would wax but honestly they are so small and blonde and unnoticeable in real life.

Here it is, my 3 (well maybe 4, I am bad at math) step process to amazing and plumper looking lips. We are finally making our way into spring but if you're anything like me, you're still recovering from dry skin and cracked lips. This winter was worse than any other. Both my skin and my lips took the a turn for the absolute worst, so I scoured magazines and websites for tips to keep them looking good. Especially considering matte lips were very popular this winter. Matte and cracked lips... eeeek not a good combo ladies!!!

Step One: I find it's easiest to complete this process by doing it twice a day, after you brush your teeth. This will make sense once you continue reading. Step one entails using your toothbrush as an exfoliator. In circular motions exfoliate your lips, you can do this with toothpaste still in your mouth, or after you've rinsed. This helps to remove any dead skin, as well as get the blood flowing in your lips, making them seem plumper. If you're lips are really dry and you have bigger pieces of dead skin, use a damp cloth and your finger and rub in circular motions. Be gentle.

Lush Bubblegum Lip Scrub
Step Two: Use your favourite lip scrub to further exfoliate and condition your lips. I love Lush's Bubblegum scrub because it tastes delicious, it has jojoba oil to condition, and it works! You really only need a little bit, so it last's quite awhile! I first scrub it onto my lips with my ring finger first, then rub my lips together a few times. The best part? You can lick the rest off because it's all natural!!!

Lush Lip Scrub

Step Three: Moisturize! You can use whatever lip product you like. There are some really good drugstore options and some good high end ones. Lately I've been using Nivea's Vanilla and Macadamia Butter. I love using it at night because you wake up with super soft lips.
Nivea Vanilla and Macadamia Lip Butter

Nivea Lip Butter

Step Four: If you're going to bed you can obviously skip this step and dream of sweet nothings. But if you're going out for the day or night you can apply your lipstick or lipgloss! I love this routine because after 2/3 of consistently doing it, you totally notice a difference. Both in softness and plumpness. I swear I always hated how thin my lips were and longed for Tanya Burr lips. But after these steps you feel a tingly feeling, and you can see the difference. A great solution if you're a bit self conscious or looking for some luscious lips. Your boyfriend or girlfriend will surely thank you!

Apocalips

Please let me know if you try, or plan on trying these tips! Or let me know your lip care routine!!! I feel like this is a part of beauty that is often overlooked.

I also want to take a second to thank all of my beautiful readers. I had no idea what I was getting into or what to expect when I created this blog. But the beauty community has been more than welcoming and I can't thank you enough. But I do want to add, I've noticed quite a few blogs/people follow me on bloglovin and if I follow back they unfollow. I've always had the rule that if you make the effort or decision to follow me I can certainly reciprocate. But after being taken advantage of numerous times on many different sites from bots and spams, and unkind people, I have to revoke that little rule. I will certainly check out your blog and if I like it I will follow, but please do not expect a follow for follow.

40 Beauty Questions: Skincare, Makeup, Brands, Oh My!

So, I have a huge list of posts to take pictures for and write up. But it's Easter weekend and I am spending some time with my family so obviously that takes precedence. But I did manage to get some retail therapy in today (I know, not really the reason for the season) with my Grandma so a huge haul will be coming. As well as a swatch/review/mini-tutorial for The Balm's Nude' Tude. And possibly a what's in my travel makeup bag. And a little Lip Care tutorial. Those are just a few of the post's coming within this week.

But, I am so amazed at the support I've had in just a week of blogging, that I wanted to get up a little something-something. I thought this would help you to get to know to me better, and me get to know you! I would love if you would reply with your responses (honestly, I love reading these types of things) or if you do this Beauty Tag on your blog/ YouTube than let me know in the comments! I love you all, and let's get this ball rolling....

The Questions:

SKINCARE

How many times do you wash your face daily?
Twice, morning and night. Unless I'm being crazy and trying a bunch of different make-up looks.

What skin type do you have? (dry, oily, combo)
Combo- Normal/Dry

What is your current facial wash?
First Aid Beauty Deep Cleanser with Red Clay and Clarins Daily Energizer Cleansing Gel

Do you exfoliate?
Of course! I find if I use a gentle exfoliator 2-3 times per week my dry skin isn't as noticeable.

What brand do you use?
The exfoliator is just a St. Ives one, other products mentioned above.

What moisturizer do you use?
Currently using a First Aid serum, and No7 Beautiful Skin cream, but looking for a new one! Any suggestions???

Do you have freckles?
Yes, but they're more noticeable in the summer when I get a bit of a tan.

Do you use eye cream?
I've been meaning to try the Bobbi Brown cream, but haven't gotten around to spending the money yet.

Do you or did you have acne prone skin?
Not really, I get the odd patch small pimples, but they're pretty manageable.

Did you ever have to use Pro-activ?
Nope.

MAKE-UP

What foundation do you use?
Currently the Clinique Tinted Moisturizer, its light, has SPF, and is totally build able.

How about concealer?
Hard Candy Glamoflage. But I'm longing to try the NARS creamy concealer, but none of my local Sephora's carry my shade (Chantilly).

Do you know your undertone colour?
Yes, pink/peachy. Which sucks because it's hard to find such pale shades with a pink undertone, they all seem to be yellow.

What do you think of fake eyelashes?
Love them on other people. Can't seem to use them properly/ get used to them on myself. One day maybe.

Did you know that you are suppose to change your mascara every 3 months?
Yes. Another secret tip I learned in Cosmetology, don't pump your mascara in and out constantly, it just adds air/ germs into the mixture and can make it dry out faster.

What brand of mascara do you use?
Currently using, and loving Tarte's Lights, Camera, Flashes. But all Tarte mascara's are amazeballs.

Sephora or MAC?
Sephora!! But I enjoy MAC as well!

Do you have a MAC Pro-card?
Nope.

What makeup tools do you use in make up application?
Brushes? My hands? Beauty blender, couldn't live without that. But I have the Real Techniques version, which is just as good, and WAY cheaper.

Do you use make-up base/primer for the eyes?
Yes, yes, yes. I forgot my NARS Pro-prime at home this weekend and my heart sank.

For the face?
Yes, I am all about the primers. Currently loving the Clinique Super Primer for redness.

What is your favorite eyeshadow?
So hard! But my heart is still taken by the Naked 3. I also love NYC shadows, if you're on a budget it's amazing. I wore a few shades today and like I mentioned, didn't have my NARS primer, and it stayed all day! I was floored!!!

Do you use pencil or liquid eyeliner?
Cat eye- liquid liner. Tight line- pencil.

How often do you poke your eyes with an eyeliner pencil?
Every. Day.

What do you think of pigment eyeshadows?
Look super pretty, but I haven't used any in a long while.

Do you use mineral makeup?
I do not.

What is your favorite lipstick?
Well, that depends. If were talking about bang for your buck, I love all Rimmel lipsticks. But, my all time favourites are my Elizabeth Arden Red Door Red and Neoclassical Coral, and my Chanel.

How about lipgloss?
Love, love, love my girl Tanya Burr's new lipgloss range!! I ordered two shades and I use them almost every day. They are creamy, not sticky, super pigmented, and have amazing staying power.

What is your favorite blush to use?
Still looking for my HG, but I dig Milani's luminoso. It's what I reach for most.

Do you buy your makeup on ebay?
No, way too scared it'd be cheap or fake.

Do you like drugstore makeup?
Of course!

Do you go to CCO's?
No, not really.

Did you ever consider taking make-up classes?
Yes, some days I think of it, but I think it's more of a self-taught hobby.

Are you clumsy in putting on makeup?
No I'm pretty good, the odd slip up but normally that's tiredness.

Name a makeup crime that you hate?
Well, I hate makeup "rules", I think makeup is a way to express yourself and if you feel good and confident than good for you! But when I see lip liner and no lipstick, or a mis-match it makes me cringe a but.

Do you like colorful shades of makeup or neutral ones?
Depends on the day and my mood!

Which celebrity always has great make up?
Taylor Swift, girl can pull of a red lip like nobody's business.

If you could leave the house using just one make up item, what would you use?
Mascara. I have super blonde, invisible lashes, so without mascara I look naked.

Could you ever leave the house without any makeup on?
Of course!

Do you think you look good even without any makeup on?
I think everyone is beautiful without makeup. It's what's inside that counts.

In your opinion, what is the best makeup line?
No particular one really, I love items from all different kinds.

What do you think of Makeup?
I could probably write an essay on this. But really, I love makeup. I think of it as an art form, a way of expression. I think makeup should be used to enhance natural beauty, not cover up or become unnoticeable.

Feelin' Suave

This week I received a sample of Suave's new Natural Infusion Awapuhi Anti-Breakage Shampoo and Conditioner, as well as their Strengthening Light Leave-In cream. I'd never heard anything about this new series of natural shampoo and to be honest the packaging kind of drew me in. I don't really need my shampoo to provide me with more volume or thickness, in fact, if there was an anti-thickness shampoo that slowly started to thin out my hair a bit, well then we'd be talking. But nevertheless I thought hey what's the worst that could happen.

Suave describes this particular part of their line as "enriched with special exotic natural ingredients such as Awapuhi ginger and honeysuckle and free from parabens and dyes, our Awapuhi Anti-Breakage shampoo and conditioner products gently cleanse and fortify hair to prevent breakage for a thicker, fuller look."

Suave Natural Infusion

Honestly, I was waaay too excited to try this stuff out and write a review for you guys. Like, its shampoo Alex, take it easy. I was so anxious to get that stuff on my head in the shower that I almost forgot to wet my hair. Yup, I opened up the little package, poured it into my hands and thought... hmm something is off in this situation. I was going to try the new Tip Tuesday from GlamLifeGuru on YouTube where you condition your hair before you shampoo. But then I thought to myself, don't want to skew these results now do we?? My 3rd year stats professor would be proud. I'm sure this is exactly what they had in mind when they taught us advanced data management.

Suave Natural Infusion

Ladies (and possibly gentlemen). This. Stuff. Smells. Good. Like better than good. You know those Herbal Essence commercials where the girls are having a real good time, mhm like that. The shampoo and conditioner smelled like what I can only imagine Ryan Gosling smells like. I didn't get a whole lot of product in the little packages, but oddly enough I didn't need a lot. Because I have such thick hair I often find myself having to drown my hair in product in order get it clean or soft feeling.

I have to say I am so used to having to spend a fortune on my hair. I was always so envious of people who could spend $10 on their hair products. For the past few years I've been spending upwards of $30-$40 on my shampoo & conditioner alone. But good news, I think that may have changed for me! After putting the leave-in conditioner in, my hair was so soft, and no frizz at all. It also smelled like Fruit Loops, which I'm sure is what Suave was going for with that.

Suave Natural Infusion

Here are some of the other Natural Infusion options that they offer. I am really interested in the Macadamia Oil one, and I think I will be purchasing it within the next few days. They are priced from $2.89 (for the shampoo & conditioner) to $5.99 (for the Macadamia Oil) which is a total steal in my opinion!! Definitely worth a good old fashion trip to the drugstore or local Target if ya ask me!

My hair, styled (which means I put in mousse and blow dried it). Doesn't get much better than that when its au natural!

**Disclaimer**
Suave did send me this sample for free, however all opinions and views are my own. Come on, you can't make this shit up.

Thank God for Harper Beckham

Yup, you read that right. Thank goodness for that cute little girl, and her amazingly stylish Mommy. But where is this really going? Well let me tell you... Buns. Buns, buns, buns. Or more fashionably known as top knots. I have ridiculously curly and thick hair and it is so hard to find hair styles that are actually attainable for me. Cute waves? Nope not going to happen. Side buns? HAH good luck. If the first step to the hair style is "brush it" you can pretty much guarantee that it's not going to happen. It takes my hairdresser an hour and a half to straighten my hair on a good day. Now I'm not going to lie, this isn't my go-to look because it is "super trendy", its my go-to look because it's easy.

Harper Beckham

Now, my top knot doesn't look nearly as cute as this. And it isn't nearly as small as this. But I have gotten quite a few comments that sound something like "how do you get so much hair into such a small bun????". Well let me tell you my secret... It's an optical illusion.

Harper Beckham

Yup, you read that right. My hair is magical. But really, I promise, if you have super thick, unruly hair, it is possible to pull off the top knot. I don't know what kind of crazy science is behind it, but the majority of my hair stays tucked in close to the scalp, and just the outside hair goes into the knot. Yeah I'm obviously not the best at explaining hair terms but you get the picture. Maybe? Maybe not.

Harper Beckham

I love that this look can be dressy and super casual. It's easy to look cute without really trying. And we would much rather spend that extra time on our makeup or sleeping right?? I usually just gather all my hair at the top of my head, then twist it a bit, and wrap it up into a little knot. And then voila! You have the top knot!!

(Please don't mind the super awkward pose, apparently I have no pictures of me wearing a top knot so this was the best I could pull off at the moment)

MTV Movie Awards

Well, it's a Sunday night and the MTV movie awards are on. As far as award shows go, I don't expect much from it in terms of fashion as most people chose to go fairly casual. However, this year I was even more surprised than usual. It was very hit or miss, and I found it hard to even chose a few favourites. With that in mind the ladies (and gentleman) that I do want to talk about really hit it out of the park.
Tyler Oakley
Tyler Oakley

I mean. I just had to feature this guy. If you're big on YouTube videos than you've probably hit that subscribe button on this one. In a season where brights and pastels are so much the rage, I think he really "took a chance" with this deep purple blazer. The pants really dress down the outfit, so he doesn't look super overdressed.

Carly Aquilino
Carly Aquilino

I have never heard of Carly before but her hair and outfit assured her spot on my favourites of the night. Are separates still in? I think they are. I adore this skirt. The leg slit and fabric overlay are what sold me. Overall I think it's a really classy look and makes me wish I was somewhere warm enough where this would be acceptable to wear.

Carly Teigan
Chrissy Teigan

Ah, John Legend's lady love. I am still kind of on the edge (of glory?) when it comes to this dress. When I first saw it I thought, love the colour, love the shape, love the jewels. Then I thought... Wait a minute. Is that a dress or a curtain taken from the Royal Palace? I think the dress would have been much more of a hit had it not had the odd bunching of fabric at the bottom.

Rocsi Diaz
Rocsi Diaz

Once again, an unknown person to myself. However, I couldn't pass up another classic white separates. Both girls paired their outfits with a classy nude heel, which I thought was interesting because I may have gone for a more bold look. But I do think the nude makes for a really elegant and fresh look.

Greer Grammer
Greer Grammer

An actress that I have actually heard of before. But that doesn't even matter, I would have loved this look regardless. Some may say it's a bit formal for the MTV awards, and even a bit old for her age. If I can remember she is pretty young, 22? I think a lot of times young actresses wear dresses like this and the media rips them apart stating they're dressing too old for their age. But I think when it comes to fashion you have to wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and beautiful. Whether thats an elegant dress or a shirt and jeans. As long as you own it, everyone will think you are the star of the show.

Jessica Alba
Jessica Alba

Ah, the creme of the crop. Honestly, I knew the moment I saw her Instagram post in this outfit I was going to LOVE it. Of course, of course it's pastel and a separate. But I love how the skirt flows to an oversized circle. And it just looks to damn pretty! I mean she could show up in a paper bag and still look gorgeous, but in my opinion she wins best dressed of the night. The perfect mix of dressed up and playful. Good work Ms. Alba!

Overall, we saw a lot of separates (have I said that enough in this post?). And a lot of neutral colours, which I think says more about the time of year than the fashion trend honestly. There were too many outfits that I would love to mention in a Worst Dressed of the Evening. BUT I am a solid believer in wearing whatever you love, because Lord knows I've made a few fashion faux-pas in my time.

Until next time!

Spring Wish List!

Well spring has sprung! How cliche of me. But really, it's been a really cold and long Canadian winter. So naturally, once the weather reached the positives (or low twenties for you Americans) my mind wandered into spring mode. If you haven't heard yet, pastels are the colour/ trend of the season. I've always loved pastels because I believe yo can be as wild or as subtle with them as you want.

You can do a single accessory or clothing item, or play it up and do multiple pieces.
Has anyone else been on the hunt for cute spring boots like this?? I can't seem to find anything similar to these anywhere and they're all sold out on their website. Any ideas or suggestions for something similar would be appreciated.

Bags, bags, bags. I love a good spring bag. These are both knockoffs of two Celine bags. I have such expensive taste but poor budget. So I scoured the internet and found these amazing replicas. Now I know some people are uber against "knockoffs" but I never try selling it as something that it's not. I have purchased from these sellers before and they are high quality bags! I will list below all products and where you can buy them! So that's what I've been loving/ lusting over this spring! What have you been eyeing??
